Bilvarchana: To Destroy Negative Energies

Bilvarchana is a potent ritual for propitiating Lord Shiva (Nithyanandeshwara), the destroyer of negative energies. Bilvaarchana is performed by chanting of the many names of Lord Shiva. Each repetition is accompanied by the symbolic offering of a bilvapatra, a medicinal leaf which is considered dear to the Lord.

Science of Bilvarchana

Although the Upanishads tells us that we are pure consciousness without a form, each of us carries an idea about ourselves. The strongest identity we hold is our name. It is also our deepest connection to our form. Even if a man is fast asleep, he can be woken up just by someone calling his name softly. If a number of people are sleeping in the same space, only the person whose name is called will wake up! This is the power that our name holds over us. As in the microcosm, so in the macrosocm.

Just as a person can be identified by name, a Divine energy can be identified and propitiated by chanting its ‘name’. Archana involves describing the many auspicious names of the Lord. Each of the names in the archana invokes a particular auspicious quality of the Divine. Each name is also a distinct energetic vibration. When we recall these qualities, we spontaneously draw that particular healing vibration to ourselves and align ourselves with it. When the chanting is accompanied by the offering of bilva leaves, the ritual becomes highly potent.

Bilva is one of the most highly regarded medicinal plants found in India. It has found pride of place in the Vedic tradition as the favored offering of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, the home of Sree (the goddess of prosperity), and the symbolic representation of Surya (the solar energy). The roots, leaves and fruits of the bilva tree acts as a miracle cure for a wide range of diseases, from constipation to anemia to mental disorders. The Bilvashtakam, a hymn in praise of the bilvarchana ritual, says, ‘Trijanma papa samhaaram, eka bilvam shivaarpanam’ (Even the sins of the past three lives are destroyed by the offering of a single bilva leaf to Shiva). What we call ‘sin’ is nothing but the negative energy and unconscious mental set-up we carry, which drives to repeat the same psycho-drama of suffering and violence in life after life. The powerful positive vibrations of the bilva have the power to flush out these negativities from deep within our system. At the energetic level, Bilva has a high sattva quotient, which cleanses and energizes the environment, boosts the immune system, promotes healing, helps combat depression and schizophrenia, and supports spiritual practices. Significance of Bilvarchana to Nithyanandeshwara lingam Any prayer or ritual done in a superconscious energy field (kshetra) enhances the benefits of the ritual thousandfold. The Bidadi kshetra is continually energized by the presence of an enlightened master, as well as the spiritual practices and worship that are regularly performed by the spiritual aspirants who live there. The trifoliate bilva leaves used in the bilvarchana at the ashram are picked from trees that grow naturally on the ashram premises, around the temple and the Vaidya Sarovar (healing lake). The very environment here is charged by the continuous chanting of mantras. Even the picking of the leaves is done with strict adherence to scriptural guidelines, and great care is taken to see that these sacred trees are in no way harmed or excessively stripped of their leaves. Nithyanandeshwara (Shiva) is also known as Ashutosha (one who is easily pleased). He grants not only the boons you ask for, but also the boon beyond all boons – the state of enlightenment. When you offer your prayer to Shiva along with the bilva leaves, the prayer is energized by the bilva, which acts as a catalyst to ensure that the Divine showers its grace in your life. Performing BIlvarchana as your offering When you offer Bilvarchana, a special sankalpa mantra will be chanted in your name along with your specific prayer.

This sankalpa mantra will act as a bridge between you and the energy and auspiciousness created for you by the Bilvarchana.
