SUVARNA TV CHIEF VISHWESHWAR BHAT ARRESTED IN DEFAMATION CASE

Advocates Association unanimously refuses to defend Bhat

Suvarna news channel and Kannada Prabha daily Editor Vishweshwar Bhat was arrested by the Bangalore Police on June 27, Wednesday in connection with a defamation case filed against him.

It may be recalled that Suvarna channel has been responsible for running a sustained hate campaign against Paramahamsa Nithyananda since 2nd June this year, falsely accusing the spiritual leader of abusing his devotees and allegedly conducting various illegal activities in his international spiritual organization Nithyananda Dhyanapeetam.

The court had earlier issued a non-bailable warrant against Vishweshwar Bhat, fed up with this repeated abstention despite seven summons and a few warrants during the past four year period. Even though he enjoyed police security as per his request, the police used to submit false report to the court that he could not be ‘traced.’ Finally, the court had ordered his arrest.

It is learnt, when Bhat was produced before the court, he was censured for wasting the precious time of the court by not appearing for hearing on earlier occasions.

Earlier, when the advocate for Bhat was about to submit a bail plea, a number of lawyers objected, saying that no one should take up Bhat’s case.

News blackout:  Ironically, almost all TV channels including Suvarna had blacked out this major news, thereby putting their creditability to test. Suvarna TV which did not mind airing developments regarding the Nithyananda episode round the clock, had failed to air news relating to its editor’s arrest.
