- Sit with legs stretched
- Place both feet together holding the soles close to one another
- Place your arms below the legs
- Raise both the legs upwards
- Bring the feet over your face
- Interlock the fingers
- Keep the palms upon the forehead
- Keep your gaze on the tip of your nose

TRANSLATION
Without any mental distractions or in other words being completely unclutched the Yogi should hold the breath in the Sushumna – the path of Kundalini along the spine. This is called the Antah Kumbhaka as explained by Lord Shiva.
TECHNIQUE
- Close your eyes. Unclutch
- Inhale and hold the breath inside
- Be in the unclutched state
- Exhale slowly and open your eyes and relax
- Breath two or three times normally
- Do this 21 times

TRANSLATION
A Yogi should retain the breath outside after exhaling slowly. This is called Bahir Kumbhaka.
TECHNIQUE
- Exhale slowly and completely
- Retain the breath as long as possible outside without any visualization
- When you can't hold anymore, relax and inhale slowly
- Do this 21 times

- Hold the knees close to the chest
- Cross the arms and hold the knees
- Place the chin on the knees

TRANSLATION
One should suck in air quickly with a lound sound of the bija mantra “VA” and retain the breath. this is called Prakrithi Kumbhaka.
TECHNIQUE
- As you chant the bija mantra “VA” loudly, suck in the air
- After you are full, hold the breath as long as you can
- Then slowly exhale normally through the nose
- Do this 21 times
- P.S: If you have Hypertension, Hernia or if you are Pregnant do not hold the breath

TRANSLATION
One should fill the air slowly into the throat like swalowing a morsel of rice and should retain it for maximum possible time, with firm application of Jalandhara Bandha (explained below) and then should exhale it from the throat. This is Naga Kumbhaka explained by Shiva. By this practice one is able to win over hunger and thirst.
TECHNIQUE
- Swallow the air little by little as if eating rice morsel by morsel
- One you are full, immediately contract the throat with Jalandhara Bandha
- Place the chin on the chest and lock the throat
- Hold the breath in this posture as long as possible, judiciously
- Then release the lock, and exhale slowly from the throat
- Do this 21 times

Shodasha-aadhaara-bandhanam ||3.12||
TRANSLATION
Contracting the throat, place the chin on the chest. This is called Jalandhra. By this bandha the sixteen adharas are closed. This and the maha mudra destroy death.

TRANSLATION
Having stopped the blinking of eyes, (the kumbhka that happens) when the eye balls and body are perfectly steady without any movements, like a log of wood, is called Kurma Kumbhaka.
TECHNIQUE
- Continue to be seated in the same posture
- Fix your sight at one point and stare continuously
- Do not blink your eyes
- Put your awareness on the nose (This creates certain awareness and cleanses parts inside your brain.Naturally your breath intake and exhalation level will come down and the Kumbhaka – holding of the breath will happen.)
- When you can’t hold the breath anymore, relax
- Do this 21 times
